International Cooperation – A Strategic Lever for Innovation and Transformation
ARES implements international academic cooperation between higher education institutions in the Global South and those in French-speaking Belgium, based on equitable and reciprocal partnerships. By co-creating knowledge and fostering research, it plays a key role in addressing climate, migration, economic, and social challenges. Its actions accelerate the circulation of knowledge, promote synergies, and position Belgium as a major player in scientific diplomacy.
In a constantly changing world marked by interconnected crises, North-South academic cooperation is a powerful driver for tackling contemporary challenges. By promoting fair sharing of knowledge and skills, it strengthens governance, increases resilience to global crises, contributes to poverty reduction, and supports international stability.
To implement this cooperation, ARES mobilizes the resources of the Commission permanente de la coopération internationale, composed of representatives from higher education institutions. This commission develops a shared vision for academic cooperation and sets the strategic directions of the program.
