Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is composed of 28 members appointed for a five-year term, except for student representatives, who are appointed for one year.

Its mission:

  • To manage ARES, with support from the Executive Bureau and the Advisory Council.
  • To issue opinions; since ARES was established in 2014, the Board has produced over 200 opinions (see below).

The Board consults the three thematic chambers and the standing committees, whose composition it defines.

It also appoints ARES representatives to external organizations and working groups.

The Board has been chaired by Jean-Paul Lambert since October 2023.

Executive Bureau

The Executive Bureau of ARES is composed of the Chair of the Board of Directors, four Vice-Chairs, and four representatives of staff and students from higher education institutions — all of whom are members of the Board. They are appointed for a one-year term.

The Bureau:

  • Prepares the work of the Board of Directors,
  • Takes urgent measures, such as responding to time-sensitive requests,
  • Ensures compliance in personnel management.

ARES Opinions and Decisions of the Board of Directors

One of ARES’s key missions is to issue formal recommendations, either on its own initiative or at the request of the government, a higher education institution, or an academic cluster, on topics related to research, study content and programs, training offers, and accreditations.

To prepare these recommendations, the Board of Directors consults one or more of the three thematic chambers, depending on their area of expertise (universities, university colleges and adult education, or arts education).

Since its creation in 2014, ARES has issued over 200 formal opinions.

These opinions are included in the records of decisions of the Board of Directors (and, where applicable, of the Executive Bureau) of ARES.
